Paroled criminals in Maryland can now use self-service kiosks to check in with their parole offices,
according to WAMU public radio station in the Washington D.C. metro area.
The state has rolled out computer self-check-in kiosks at each of its parole offices. The kiosks use hand-scanning technology to identify the parolee and ensure that the right person is actually checking in. Only low-risk offenders who have been supervised for sufficient time and been compliant can use the kiosks, which also can randomly select parolees for drug testing.
Judging from a picture posted with the story, the kiosk is essentially a PC with a hand scanner attached.
